Liang Ndara and Caci Dance
Liang Ndara is located at Mbeliling District in West Manggarai Regency, around 20 km or 45 minutes drive from Labuan Bajo. The village lies beside Mbeliling forest which is home to four bird species endemic to Flores. Several springs—from which people in Labuan Bajo gain freshwater, can be found in the forest. Attractions Liang Ndara offers a handful of attractions that visitors can enjoy or explore, such as:
- Caci Dance and Caci tools production
Most tourists come to Liang Ndara to see Caci Dance. However, there are many other dances and performances that tourists can enjoy while visiting Liang Ndara, such as: Tektek Alu (bamboo dance), Sanda dance (communion dance), and Pacek Mawo (rice planting dance).
- Handicraft and weaving
The local handicrafts and weavings are mostly produced by the women of the village. Tourists can both enjoy the making of the handicrafts and weavings as well as buy the exotic products such as the traditional hat made of pandan leaves or the bright colored-weaving of Flores.
- Palm sugar production
Although sugar is not a rare product in Flores, people in Liang Ndara use palm sugar for their daily need. The palm is grown around the village and the palm sugar is also made locally. Try to taste freshly made palm sugar in the mill.
- Palm wine distillation
During the welcoming ceremony, visitors are usually offered to taste sopi—the local palm wine. Visiting the palm wine production in the village will give you a new experience as well as a better picture of sopi.
- Coffee and candlenut processing
While relaxing in Liang Ndara Village, you can visit the local coffee processing and enjoy the strong taste of the Manggaraian coffee. The coffee is processed traditionally by the locals using traditional tools thus creates the unique aroma and taste of the Manggaraian coffee.
Around Liang Ndara area, there are three waterfalls that are accessible by foot: Liang Kantor, Wae Satar, and Wae Rewus.
- Endemic bird species
For those who enjoy birdwatching, Liang Ndara is a perfect birding spot in Flores. All of the four Flores-endemic bird species can be found here. They are: Flores Monarch, Wallace’s Hanging-parrot, Flores Scops-owl, and Flores Crow.
- Mount Mbeliling
Trekking to Mount Mbeliling can be a challenging experience due to the hot temperature and the steep slope. Standing at 1.312 meter above sea level, the highest peak of Mount beliling can be reached after a four to five hour-walk from Cecer Hamlet in Liang Ndara. Tourists are then able to camp at or near the peak and enjoy the beautiful scenery of sunset of Mbeliling Landscape. Trekkers can also observe several plant species that are utilized by the villagers, and also the four species of birds endemic to Flores during the trek.
- Rice paddies
In Liang Ndara, you can enjoy the scenery of rice paddies while witnessing farmers cultivating their lands with buffalos. Here, most farmers still maintain the traditional way to farm.
